David Watts Barton

David Watts Barton Profile PhotoAward-winning journalist David Watts Barton has been a writer, editor and radio talk show host for more than 30 years. He began his career as a pop music critic, columnist and feature writer for The Sacramento Bee and the McClatchy Company’s wire service before moving on to become Editor-in-Chief of online upstart sacramentopress.com, a legal correspondent for Bloomberg and host of the daily live interview show, Insight, on Northern California and Nevada’s NPR-affiliate Capital Public Radio, as well as on various podcasts. He has also appeared as a guest on numerous radio stations.

Besides The Sacramento Bee, Barton’s writing has appeared in such newspapers as The Miami Herald, The Dallas Morning News, The Orange County Register, The Portland Oregonian, The San Francisco Examiner, The Rocky Mountain News, The San Diego Union Tribune and the International Herald Tribune. As a freelancer, Barton’s work has appeared in Sacramento’s alt-weekly, the Sacramento News and Review, as well as the city magazines Sactown and Sacramento Magazine, and the literary magazine Under the Gum Tree.

After leaving SacramentoPress.com, his take on that “citizen journalism” experiment appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review. He also appeared as a guest on WNYC’s Morning Edition, discussing the rise of monologues in New York. He also covered live music and theater for a time at Stagetology.com. Finally, Barton continues to be a frequent guest commentator on Capital Public Radio and KFBK-1530 in Sacramento.

In addition to awards including the first Arts Journalist of the Year, given by the Sacramento Arts and Business Council in 2011, Barton has been a fellow at UC Berkeley’s Knight Digital Media Center and at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

He lives in New York City.
