About David

David Watts Barton has more than 25 years of multimedia journalism experience, bringing his talents as an interviewer, writer and editor to newspapers, magazines, radio, websites and social media. Since 2008, he has served as a host of “Insight” on Capital Public Radio, an hour-long live interview show on current events, science, business, education and the arts on Sacramento’s NPR affiliate.

Barton’s writing has appeared in The Sacramento Bee, as well as in The Miami Herald, The Orange County Register, The Portland Oregonian, The San Francisco Examiner, The Rocky Mountain News, The San Diego Union Tribune and the International Herald Tribune. In 2011, he had an essay published in the prestigious Columbia Journalism Review.

From 2008-2011, Barton was the Editor-in-Chief of hyper-local news website SacramentoPress.com, leading the nation in this new form of online local journalism.

During that time, he was a fellow at UC Berkeley’s Knight Digital Media Center and at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. A strong supporter of diversity in journalism, he is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association and the Asian American Journalists Association. He is a past member of the American Society of News Editors.

Taking advantage of the synergy between all these platforms, Barton continues to expand his scope and develop new skills. He won the first Arts Journalist of the Year Award from the Arts and Business Council of Sacramento in October 2011. He has twice been nominated for the Downtown Sacramento Partnership’s VIBE Award (Visionaries In Building Excellence).
